5.0 out of 5 stars Healthier sugar with more molasses
Review for 1 pound bag of jaggery from MB Herbals I really like that jaggery is a healthier form of sugar since it has more of the plant's natural nutrients still in it. Jaggery is a minimally refined sugar product that retains more of the molasses than normal American refined sugar. That means it's also a good source of iron and other nutrients that have been taken out of white sugar. It does have a molasses or caramel taste, just like you'd expect if you mixed refined sugar with a touch of molasses. The flavor might not lend itself to all your recipes, but it's quite nice when appropriate. I rarely bake sweets, but I think it works quite well in tea. As for the jaggery caking, I didn't have much of a problem with that when I opened the package. There were a couple of little lumps but they weren't too hard. It's like the more familiar brown sugar, though, and can harden if it's exposed to moisture. I keep it stored in plastic bags after I've removed as much air as possible. Microwaving for a few seconds at a time will soften it if it clumps. While MB Herbals does not adulterate the jaggery with anti-caking agents, they do add little desiccant pouches to the bags of jaggery. They're only about half the width of most desiccants that I see packed with products so they might be easy to miss. Make sure you don't scoop it up in a measuring cup.
4.0 out of 5 stars Nice alternative to sugar
This is my first time using jaggery and it is an interesting alternative to sugar. I haven't gotten a chance to try any recipes that specifically call for jaggery yet. However, I did try substituting it for brown sugar in a few places and it was good although I don't find it to be a 1 for 1 substitute. Jaggery has a bit different flavor profile.I don't have any brands to compare this but it seems to be of good quality and it comes in a nice resealable bag.
5.0 out of 5 stars An interesting alternative to other sugars
I've never used jaggery before, but I have used piloncillo. It is made from cane syrup, but there is no no indication on the package as to whether this jaggery was made from cane syrup or palm sap. As expected, it isn't as sweet as white cane sugar. It also doesn't have as much of a caramel-type flavor as brown sugar. I understand jaggery can vary quite a bit in terms of flavor and some can be quite dark with a variety of flavors in addition to sweetness. This jaggery seems to be fairly light and is primarily sweet with just a touch of an earthy, almost slightly sour flavor that is interesting. When I opened my bag the top inch or so mostly contained various sizes of tiny to small "pebbles" of hardened jaggery, but underneath it seems to be mostly a convenient powder. Of course I expected some clumping given that it doesn't contain any anti-caking agents. I've used the cone form of similar sugars and, for me, this power is far more convenient.
1.0 out of 5 stars Nothing like sugar!
Don’t believe these reviews! This tastes nothing like sugar, it is barely sweet. I’d return it if I could.
5.0 out of 5 stars jaggery is sugar
Jaggery is made from sugarcane and toddy palm tree and it isn't as refined as regular sugar. It has a lower glycemic index than regular sugar, so it is really good if you are trying to control your blood sugar levels. It tastes like sugar and it has a nice brown color to it. It tastes great and I will be purchasing more Jaggery in the future instead of refined sugar
5.0 out of 5 stars great sugar replacement
I love my new way of sweetening things, without using refined sugar. The jaggery powder makes everything sweet enough, no need to use big portions. I don't mind the lumps, but will take more precaution to mix it up better and break the lumps down. You don't want to bite one of the lumps and have a mouthful of pure sweetness.Just love the option of a more healthy lifestyle this gives me.
4.0 out of 5 stars even if it’s not better than sugar, it’s at least equivalent to brown sugar
Review of Organic Jaggery Powder 1 lb 16 oz 454g | Raw Untreated Jaggery Powder | No Anti-Caking Agent Used | No PreservativeJust like you, I had to look it up: “Jaggery powder is made from the sap of sugarcane that contains high amounts of sucrose.” I ordered it because it sounded like a nice organic sugar substitute.Pros: * tastes sweet * I’ll try it in recipes that call for brown sugar * organic and all naturalCons: * could form clumps (no anti-caking additive) * might not be a direct substitute for traditional American sugar; I will update this review if I encounter any issues while baking
