5.0 out of 5 stars Great quality on a budget

This is my first experience with a projector outside of a professional setting, and I am pleasantly impressed with the quality of the PJ40 Gen 3 in both the construction, as well as the picture quality and sound quality. The projector was very well packaged and easy to setup, with very easy to follow, as well as extensively detailed, instructions. I was able to get it setup in running in a matter of minutes just projecting onto a wall as a quick test run. Connecting to Wi-Fi was straight forward, and already going through an update, while not the fastest, was easy as well. The interface seems easy to navigate, and fairly responsive. I am impressed with how bright and accurate the colors looked, even in comparison to projects worth many times more, while just projecting on a random wall. The physical and digital keystone adjustments were very easy to get setup, and once focused, the image (while only 1080p through HDMI currently, possibly changing with a future update though) was impressive and definitely seems to rival that of even some 4k tv's in terms of color vibrance and accuracy. The audio quality is surprisingly good from the built-in speakers, and after some eq tuning, have a decent amount of fullness and not lacking in mid/bass tones that most built-in speakers do. I would not say that they would be the replacement of some dedicated sound equipment such as a quality soundbar or receiver and speakers, but definitely are perfectly fine for a mobile gaming/movie setup. The construction of the projector seems very solid and seems to be made of quality materials and well put together. Overall, I would say that I am very happy with the PJ40 gen 3 for its price point.

5.0 out of 5 stars Extremely easy to set up for an impromptu quality movie night

The media could not be loaded. Out of the box, it is very easy and straightforward to set up. Of course, one should do their due diligence and refer to the instruction manual, but if, for some reason, all manuals became extinct, you would not necessarily need it. The biggest downside I noted was that out of the box it took about 45-50 minutes for the initial software update through my high speed WiFi network, but the projector doesn't force you to update it.I tried using the projector four different ways: through the HDMI cord (not included), the Apple AirPlay feature, the Android Cast feature, and Bluetooth. If you can, stick with HDMI (unsurprisingly) or with AirPlay for visuals, but the built-in speaker worked great on either method. The Bluetooth mode is very easy to connect and is used for playing sound through the projector, not for actually projecting any visuals. It doesn't sound like a high-end speaker and it doesn't claim to, but it certainly gets the job done. Treble is a bit empty and higher notes are raspy and hollow, and bass is lacking and lower notes are just absent. If you just want to watch a movie or show, it is perfectly fine. For music, its a bit better than a phone or laptop speaker. It is extremely easy to connect either way through the startup menu. It is intuitively organized in boxes similar to a Windows phone (pics included) and easy to navigate with the physical buttons on the projector or with the included remote. The first method I tried was the Android Cast, and, while it did work and show what I was watching, it was limited to about 15-30 fps and the audio would skip sometimes. It is easy and useable in a pinch, but I couldn't figure out a way to optimize the stream. My brother tried Apple AirPlay after I helped him set it up and it worked great. The picture of Cheaters I included was playing from his iPhone 11 Pro Max and it was running at what I would estimate is 60 fps. The sound didn't skip and was as good as any mode. The HDMI mode was plug and play, buy and large like a monitor. Watching movies on it was good, but I would say forget about playing any games. The input lag is probably like a full second (see video) and that was with HDMI. I didn't try playing any games from my phone because I wouldn't be able to use the camera at the same time, but I imagine it would be even worse. All in all, the weak points on this projector are located in what makes this projector stand out. That is to say that when it comes to doing what it was made to do, to project, it is a 5 out of 5. The extra innovation behind it (e.g. built-in speaker w/ Bluetooth, Apple AirPlay, Android Cast) works *fine*, but I wouldn't use it necessarily as a selling point. To be able to sell it more on this stuff I would say it would have to be more portable, if not by getting rid of the need to be plugged in then by at least making it smaller without sacrificing quality.TL;DR: If you're looking for a projector, this will certainly get the job done with high resolution. Whether that is worth the price is a call you'll have to make, but I wouldn't focus too much on using the Android Cast or Bluetooth modes as selling points, though Apple AirPlay and HDMI worked great.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great all-around projector

    M. · March 6, 2024

I am very happy with the projector so far. It was very quick to get up and running the first time, and even easier now I'm familiar with it if I move it somewhere else. Wireless screen share from my phone worked flawlessly as did connecting from my computer, the Switch, or Roku via hdmi. I saw it had options to open office files, video picture and videos directly from a USB stick and was surprised when I tested it that it could open and play a power point file I had, including the embedded videos. I would still prefer to connect directly to my computer, but at least it has the option. I was also glad it came with the AV cable to connect older devices that still use the red/white/yellow RCA connectors (like the Wii and an older dvd player).Watch out when cleaning the lense with the provided cloth, that pushing on the lense may be enough to push it in and change the focus, so it will need to be manually focused again afterwards.Picture quality is very good. I found I could get in focus better if I used I had text on the screen that showed the sharp lines well when in focus. I found that if the projector is at an angle from the surface that even with the manual focus, you might not get the whole screen to be in focus at once because one side would need to be focused differently than the other. This is more noticeable when projecting to a closer surface (like from my desk to the wall only 5 feet away), and less noticeable the farther away it is. In the room where we set up the projector it was 114" away and was crisp all across the 92" diagonal of the image. The brightness is pretty good. I didn't mind watching movies with the lights on and couldn't notice any fading. I could notice fading in the middle of the day with bright ambient light coming through our windows without any blinds, but several times I still found my 10 year-old choosing to watch shows on the projector despite that.Keystone adjustment was quick and easy to use. The 4-way keystone was great when I had the projector at my desk and couldn't get the image straight across from the projector. I have heard other projectors only have horizontal or vertical keystone correction, but that wouldn't have been good enough in that case. The keystone correction does add just a slight delay, but can easily be turned off in cases that it matters, like for some video games or to help sound to better align with video in certain setups.Plugging in a computer mouse to the projector was a nice alternate way to control the projector, but the remote and buttons on the projector itself were easy to use too.I noticed the fan noise at first though others said they didn't even notice. Even so, it was nice to be able to adjust the fan speed to turn it down a bit.The audio sound is the only thing I had to really fiddle with and try different things with depending on the input source and speakers being used. Sound direct from the projector was great. It could get plenty loud and had to turn it way down depending on certain shows. If we wanted to connect external speakers there are lots of options, with is both a pro and a con: The con being that some of the combos didn't work like we wanted, with some audio being out of sync with the video, but the pro being we weren't stuck with a single option and could find something that worked. The only solution for fixing sound-sync issues that was suggested from the online startup video didn't help us because it suggested switching wifi from 2.4g to 5g wifi, but we were already connected to 5g, and that doesn't make sense when using something that doesn't even require the projector to use wifi. When screen sharing from my phone and connecting a blue-tooth speaker to the projector, the sound was out of sync (note that there are two different bluetooth options on the projector in different places: one is for the projector to transmit sound to a bluetooth speaker, and one is for another device to play sound to the projector as if the pojector was a bluetooth speaker)--but if I connected the bluetooth speaker to my phone directly then the screen share video to the projector synced well to the sound. That was the opposite case when connecting to my computer though (with an hdmi cable). If the sound came from my computer it was just a hair ahead of the image (and turning off keystone correction would improve it), but changing it so the sound came from the projector directly or bluetooth headphones connected to the projector let it be in sync. Every bluetooth speaker and headset we used would connect easily to the projector and speakers via the 3.5mm jack worked great. Having some audio/video sync tool on the projector would be an excellent feature to add in future versions so that you could get it to work flawlessly with almost any setup--but I haven't looked around to see if such a feature exists on other devices to compare.

    Awesome Entry Level Projector

After a disappointing experience with the WiMiUS P64 due to a defective remote and lackluster performance, I decided to try the NexiGo PJ40 3rd Gen based on a recommendation from The Hook Up YouTube channel. I’m glad I did, it completely transformed my expectations for budget projectors. The image quality is significantly better. The PJ40 has a much brighter and sharper picture, with more vibrant colours. Both projectors have loud fans, the PJ40’s fan has a less irritating sound. The PJ40 supports a 4K signal at 60Hz (as opposed to the 30Hz limit on the WiMiUS), which makes HDR signals available and is supported as well. Also makes viewing fast-moving sports much smoother (you can actually see the ball :).The PJ40 also supports CEC, so my Chromecast remote can power on the projector and control. To my surprise, the PJ40's remote even controls both my Chromecast and Fire TV Stick.Overall, the NexiGo PJ40 is a much more refined and feature-packed option for a similar price range, and it outperforms the WiMiUS P64 in almost every aspect. I would note that the sound on the WiMiUS was better but I'm using an AV receiver so it does not matter. I highly recommend it if you're looking for an affordable high-quality projector!

Video Quality good and enough brightness, sound not lip sycn. Picture lags 120ms behind own sound.

    J. · October 12, 2024

It is of course device a budget device. I would say, the picture is almost as good as a much more expensive device I also own. A major problem is the lagging of the video behind he sound, first you hear talking then somebodies lips start moving, just too late. Also when I use the sound output of the projector itself and connect it from there to the amplifier, there is still a 120ms delay of the video. Impossible to use with DVD or Blu-ray players to watch movies. But with a PC you can install a sound delay filter, set it to 120ms and it is perfect for streaming. When I use Bluetooth speakers, strangely the lagging is in the other direction, the speakers are lagging a little behind the video, not much, but too much for DVD or Blu-ray usage. I tried this with two different Bluetooth speaker sets, which work perfectly with my other device. I used the latest firmware and tried all possible settings. At the the end, I went back to the wired connection and use it with a sound delay filter via PC only. It suits for me, but a little disappointment, I cannot really use my beloved old DVD/Blu-Ray player with this projector.
