5.0 out of 5 stars This is the Best Hourglass I’ve Ever Had in My Own Hands!
Wow! This is a beautiful (and accurate) hourglass. I ordered the version with the red sand, and it is beautiful! The wooden top and bottom of the hourglass is nicely finished and the three poles that hold them together and the hourglass itself securely in place are really nice. They aren’t fixed in place but spin as you pick up the hourglass (so be careful). The little knobs at the bottom both make the hourglass sit more securely (it doesn’t wobble) and makes it bit more slippery on a surface. The glass is quite sturdy – I’ve knocked it over on a table (while moving something else) and the glass didn’t break (Whew!). Of course, the top and bottom provide the contact points and prevent the glass from banging in the first place. But you can tell by looking at the glass and tapping it that it is strong. The glass is surprisingly accurate. In one direction the average time was 1 hour, 1 minute and 35 seconds. Running the other way the average time run was 1 hour, 1 minute and 45 seconds. I tested this four times for each direction (actually, several more times than that, but I remembered to check it too late the other times. That’s a very good accuracy for an hourglass (2.9% off, which is good enough!).So, I’m very glad to have this! I keep it out on my kitchen island, and so many visitors comment on it and ask if they can turn it over!Update: My granddaughter managed to break this (alas!). But I liked this hourglass enough that when my wife asked me what I wanted for a Birthday present, the first thing that popped into my mind was to ask for another hourglass - this hourglass. I provided her with the link and studiously avoided looking at the packages that came from Bolo (but I did notice a message on my orders page). So now I have another beautiful hourglass (which is kept up above where little hands can reach).
4.0 out of 5 stars Gotta like a red sand hour glass!
This 60 minute hourglass stands just over 9 1/2” tall. The red sand definitely stands out on this hourglass where the top and bottom pieces are stained dark and the vertical supports are straight black. Speaking of which, the support rods go through the top and bottom wood bases and are held together with cap nuts. The nuts were all loose when it arrived so I had to hand tighten them. The hourglass glass was also not centered because of the loose nuts so I had to recenter that as I tighten the nuts. I would normally give this 5 stars but this is actually the 2nd hourglass I received since I had to return the first one. The first one arrived in a very damaged box and the glass itself had a crack (no sand coming out though). The box for this replacement was also not in the best condition but the hourglass itself was fine. I timed this hourglass and the last bit of sand fell at the 56 minute mark. That’s 4 minutes short of the 60 it claims but then again, these aren’t meant to be accurate. If you want accuracy, you need to go digital. That said though, i use it to time my lunch break so finishing 4 minutes early helps ensure I log back into work on time!
5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful Decor
I love this hourglass. I have it in my office and it's a beautiful piece that adds a nice class to the decor. I haven't timed it to the minute, but it does seem to be pretty close to the hour mark. It was shipped securely and arrived in good shape. I love having it on display.
5.0 out of 5 stars Attractive!
Wonderful piece of desk art. I’ve always wanted one of these and finally have one. It’s classic old tech and demonstrates early ingenuity. It’s fun to watch and the time-keeping isn’t too bad. No winding, no batteries, and no radiation. It would be fun to see an integrated alarm bell that rang when all the sand dropped. I saw one review mention that it was great to use for business meetings, I agree; how different it would be to see the manager whip this out to start the meeting.
5.0 out of 5 stars Calming and decorative hourglass perfect for online meetings
This hourglass has become my go-to for online meetings and even interviews. It's super easy to operate and well-finished, making it both functional and aesthetically pleasing. The wooden base and metal pillars give it a solid, vintage feel, while the flowing sand provides a calming effect during busy days. Beyond its practicality, it’s a beautiful piece that adds charm to any desk or room.
4.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful, fragile.
Beautiful piece, nicely sized a bit bigger than expected but just more to love. Less than a foot, maybe around 8 inches? Elegant, stately, no at all gaudy decor piece with seemingly real stained wood and metal reinforcement bars. Could grace pretty much any shelf, desk, tabletop etc with ease and hardly risk clashing. Obviously this is a functional hourglass, I only timed it once but it did actually turn out to be more like an hour and six minute glass, although thet human error of margin there could mean it is more an hour and 3-5 minute glass, to be fair. Functional as is, it still is indeed a *decor* piece, but I would have hoped for a little more durability. Some plexiglass or hell even plastic would be fine by me if it's capable of serving the same purpose. I knocked not exactly lightly but not more, I think, than solidly moderately into the hourglass with something else, specifically another of my dresser top decors (candle holder) while rearranging things and was sad to see it broke a chunk of glass out of the curvature of the glass about an inch around. Humidity invaded and all sand is at a.. sandstill, you could say (ba dum tss). Note this is not a mark against craftmanship, it was fine and looks plenty fancy, just a lack of durability in materials but as I don't know the requirements for hourlgass making nor the limits of plexiglass flexibility, I cannot truly firmly say that it's able to be made more durably. But I am sad because it was truly lovely.
5.0 out of 5 stars Classy looking
Haven't seen one of these in a long time. Its solid, old school looking and appears to be well made. Kids like using it as a timer for various activities including chores because now they can race each other.
