5.0 out of 5 stars A scary, suspenseful, dramatic tale!
I’ve enjoyed all four of the author’s previous books, and since I knew this one, like the previous, drew on her personal experience, I was even more excited to dive in.STORY. As with her previous books, Julia Ash knows how to weave a compelling tale that keeps you engaged. It opens with quite a bang, literally and figuratively, with some skillful foreshadowing woven into a surprising inciting incident. From there, the plot is probably what you would expect from the genre: a couple purchases a plot of land that wasn’t supposed to be sold and learns the hard way why it wasn’t supposed to be sold. That’s where the expected ends and the twists begin, though I don’t want to spoil them. The author is a master of escalating tension and keeping you guessing without resorting to cheap tricks. The scares are earned and the twists make sense.SETTING. Absolutely loved the setting. I don’t live far from the Poconos so there was a touch of familiarity about Windy Hill Farm and its surrounding areas. The farm itself becomes a living, breathing character as well; seeing it come to life from the ground up invests the reader in its well-being…and its history.CHARACTERS. Nora and Dex are an eminently adorable couple. Perhaps a touch idealized, but that makes them endearing. They complete each other perfectly. Dex clearly loves and respects Nora, and Nora is strong enough to let herself be vulnerable around Dex. Despite her inner strength, he is her safety and she is his. It works very well. Nora is a modern woman but she retains a classical wisdom about things. She’s not afraid to charge in or stand up for herself, but she recognizes the need we all have for love and companionship and allows herself to be vulnerable when she needs to. Her bond with her sister is one I’m sure many siblings wish they would have had themselves. And while I don’t want to say much about Isabella…some of the best writing in this book involves this mysterious character.OVERALL. It’s another winner for me. From the surprise opening to the earned and fitting ending, FIND THEM is a tremendously fun, moody ride. The scares land well, the plot is engaging and makes sense even when it twists, and the endearing characters are charming, the perfect companions and guides through the gripping story. The ending leaves you feeling satisfied with a tale well told...and perhaps a little sad that it’s over. But that affords us the opportunity to get excited about Julia Ash’s next book!
4.0 out of 5 stars Both a Captivating Ghost Story and a Valuable Examination of the Human Experience
Find Them is a well-planned, suspenseful ghost story that grips you from the first page and tugs you along to the very last. Nora is strong, likable and empathetic, and feels like a fully-fleshed person. The ghosts are unique and push the story along without making it feel cheesy or completely impossible. The supernatural elements sent a chill down my spine without feeling overdone, and Nora's responses to these strange occurrences feel mostly probable. My one issue with Nora as a character is her acceptance of the blatant sexism and disrespect she faces. Much of her character development focuses on her stepping into her own power and standing up for herself in crises. However, I feel like this newfound strength is undercut by the fact that she allows men, including her husband, to disrespect her based on her gender. Certainly, this response is understandable, but given that Nora seems to be a strong, capable woman in all other aspects of her life, it is disappointing that she lets men disrespect her. Still, it could be argued that this adds to the realism of her character. She has faults, which makes her feel like the rest of us.Overall, the ease with which readers can connect with Nora, combined with the well-written paranormal elements make this an extremely enjoyable read.
5.0 out of 5 stars Great Read
When I found out about this book, I was ready to buy it immediately! I love the world of the supernatural and this book is just what I needed! The book is filled with ghosts, action, thrills, and suspense. There is nothing about it that I didn't love, so let's crack into it!When the book began, we learn about Nora and Dex. They make the choice to move to a very rural area to escape the city. They feel like this will be a great, new start for them. Little did they know what would happen. At first, the farm seems like the perfect home for them. Nora begins to have some incidents that freak her out a little bit. At first, they start small, but as their time at the farm goes on, the incidents get worse. Even Dex, who never thought he would believe in the supernatural, finds himself worried about what is happening in their home. What these two didn't know when they moved in was that there have been a lot of terrible things happening here. Nora hears strange noises, there are sinkholes that come out of nowhere, and the feeling that she gets in the house is unlike any other. This is not what she signed up for and these two have to get to the bottom of what happened here. They decide to learn more about the history of the home and it turns out that the land wasn't supposed to be sold. There is one spirit, Isabelle, who has been haunting the property and won't stop. All of these incidents have put Nora in a hard place, but she is determined to find out who else is haunting her home.Nora begins to face these spirits head on and her strength and courage in the book are just fantastic! This book had me on the edge of my seat from beginning to end and I would suggest that anyone who loves the supernatural should give it a go! This book has everything that you need from thrills to mysteries and suspense. You will not regret grabbing it!
3.0 out of 5 stars Meh
This book.. at times was ok but really not great. Vague spoilers but everyone wrote the same way in their letters in the book with unnecessary parentheses. Characters are basically Mary Sues without flaws. Some irrelevant and unbelievable event happens early on that no one is phased by, even though they moved whole states because of another event even before that. I think the ghost story was ok but there needs to be something believable in the book and there wasn’t.
If you like a ghost story you’ll love this one
Wow! This book is brilliant. I’ve read several ghost books over the years but this is top of my list. The detail, the emotion, the scary stuff - just brilliant. The drama and suspense - who did it? I kept changing my mind as I read and even though I thought I’d guessed right, the lead up to finding out was gripping. The build up with each new lead and then the frustration at a dead end. My nerves were frayed. So much so I was up until after 5am reading because I couldn’t put it down. I’m definitely looking forward to reading more by this author and will recommend this book to everyone.
There are no spoilers of any kind below!
I have mixed feelings about this book. On one hand, I loved the narrative and the pacing whereas I felt the personal connect to many characters was missing. Let me make this clear, this may not be important for many of you but for me having something to relate to the main character really helps me develop a sense of belonging to the story itself.I loved the way the story was structured, the plot itself was concise with little to no obvious plot holes. I have always been a fan of novels using dates for chapters, this gives the whole more of a journal feel rather than a boring monotonous narrative. The characters were very well written and individually they were excellently placed in the story. For me though, I was not able to connect/relate to the characters very much. Again, this is just a me problem. Maybe it will go away if I re-read it. Overall, I loved this book and will recommend you to give it a try. The story is fun and very engaging. Lastly, much gratitude to the authoress for writing this book for us, readers.Thank youHappy Reading
