5.0 out of 5 stars MINISFORUM UM890 Pro - Fast, powerful, quiet and stays cool
This review is for the MINISFORUM UM890 Pro. I was looking for an all around fast PC with good graphics for gaming. I run multiple virtual machines at the same time with Windows and Linux operating systems. My gaming is mostly MMORPGs.I am very impressed with how fast and quiet this Mini PC is even with 100% CPU and 100% Graphics processing. Running continuously at 100% CPU and 100% GPU the temperatures were 71c for the SOC (entire chip) and 81c for the CPU. The system had no problems and the fans were still barely noticeable. The air coming out was warm, but not hot. The 4nm gate technology makes a big difference. It has no problem running virtual machines (make sure to turn off Windows 11 Core Isolation!). I use VirtualBox to run everything from Windows NT 4.0 to Windows 11.Mint Linux 22 with the 6.1 kernel has support for the graphics in this PC. Earlier versions did not detect the graphics device. If you plan to use Linux, make sure you have a recent distro with at least the 6.1 kernel. It comes with Windows 11 Pro. It also starts encrypting your disk as soon as you install Windows. If you don't want your disk encrypted, turn off BItLocker encryption as soon as possible, so you don't have to wait for the disk to be decrypted. My biggest problem with Windows 11 was the Core Isolation security feature. It caused virtual machines to malfunction without any error messages from Windows about blocking access by software. It wasn't obvious why the virtual machines were slow, erratic and crashing. The network ports, wireless and Bluetooth work great and are fast. The audio on the front is clean and quiet to make the most of your headphones or sound system. This Mini PC is well worth the price. It packs a lot of power in a small space and still manages to be quiet and cool. I added a larger nVME module and the PC was easy to upgrade. I had a little trouble reconnecting the fan cable to the main board. It would be better if that cable was longer, so that the top can be flipped up completely without disconnecting the fan. The PC also comes with a separate OCulink card that has to be installed by you if you want it. The OCulink card goes in one of the M.2 slots. So, you might want to install the OCulink card and upgrade storage or RAM at the same time. Be prepared for reconnecting a tiny fan connector.
5.0 out of 5 stars Better than expected, completely happy (at least for now!)
This mini (the size of a couple of decks of cards) was intended to replace my personal office "beast" - I run office apps, word, excel, etc., lots of internet windows for cloud based apps - at times there will be 30 plus memory hogging chrome windows open at a time. This has replaced my beloved but archaic Lenovo ThinkCentre i7.Less power consumption, almost no noise, tiny, and FAST - my Lenovo was too old for Windows 11. This came with 11 Home (bummer) which was easy enough to upgrade. It has been rock solid. There are rare instances I'll see it stutter/"freeze" for a few minutes, but so did my i7 - it MAY be when the multiple windows are crushing it, I'm above 89% memory utilization (thanks Chrome!) and possibly onedrive/backup stuff is going on.This has been used 24/7 (or at least on 24/7) for about 3 weeks - no need to hard reboot, and if it gets sluggish (like every other windows machine I've had) a quick reboot makes it happier.I'm running 2x 4k displays which it runs fine. Zoom/Teams video, podcasts, etc. - no problem, this little guy can handle it.Check scanner? Check! Regular scanner? Check! Voip phone interface, every desktop app i've had before, windows, onedrive, backups, antivirus, windows office apps, all running fine and reliably. I regret not trying fusion 360 on it when i was setting it up at home. I'm sure it would have run fine, and may try in my office and then delete - this is a work machine, no time for fiddling here!My next step is to probably design and 3d print an underdesk mount. It does come with a VESA mount, but I won't want the spaghetti of wires behind a monitor, and not as easy to reach.I am super satisfied with this little guy, and plan to swap out EVERY desktop in the office with on of these. I HOPE it lasts. You can't really upgrade, beyond RAM and storage (both ample for me). I THINK you can somehow upgrade the video. I wouldn't.At $400 if you get ONE year out of it, you probably did alright. I hope to get more than a year.I really don't have any cons to it. I would have loved an underdesk mount included, but that may not suit a lot of folks. I am also using a USB hub (like I did with my prior PC) which adds several more devices to the mix - all working splendidly.I WAS going to build a $1k machine - this was turnkey, and 40% of the price.I also bought a $1,000 Dell that didn't output 4k x 2 so that went to my assistant, and i was not a happy camper. This little guy? I'm a happy camper. Wish I could return that Dell!
High performance SFF pc.
I wanted a SFF portable desktop that was just large enough to install a low profile dual slot GPU and this unit fit my needs. The nvme slot has a plastic cover that pops up instead of a screw and was hard to reach because of the small case.I used a MSI 3050 low profile video card and it just managed to fit in the case. The temperatures were a little high so I added aNoctua NF-A8 PWM to the front to exhaust the hot air.. l could only use one screw to attach it to the case. I also downloaded Fan Control software to adjust the fan curve of the unit.It has been rock solid so far for me.Highly recommended.
1 week wait, $900+, and it's dead on arrival
Spent over $900 and waited almost a week and it's dead on arrival.I waited for it too boot, tried swapping the ram, tried cmos reset, nothing! No video or USB power.Very disappointed!
A little beast
The best bang for the buck, great performance all around. One thing that needs to be mentioned, this is a gaming laptop in disguise, so there are things you can tweak to further optimize the performance especially since battery isnt an issue, you can tweak for more performance. Also under the power options make sure to switch off hibernate after sleep as it will get annoying, especially if you have it set up in your living room with wireless keyboard and mouse. It is a bit more on the expensive side, but if you're planning on decent gaming for current PC games, it does the job. If you're into emulation, it handles everything that's out there. 64gb of ram is overkill but at least you're covered knowing ram will never be an issue. If you're only interested in media, you can look for something cheaper.
Super poderosa
Es increíble el poder para ser una caja. El único problema que le he encontrado es que si conectas discos duros externos los está apaga y apaga todo el tiempo. Es a nivel motherboard, no se puede modificar...
