This is basswood, not Balsa. The seller should not have Balsa even mentioned in the description but I'm sure they're just using that as a key word for more search hits.The wood itself is okay and what you'd expect buying a kit like this. The grain is straight enough to be useful but I got some pieces that I'll have to be picky about their application. The wood is pretty hard for Basswood which tells me it was dried and has been sitting for a long time. The drier it is, the harder to cut by hand but you could soften it a bit yourself.I got this kit to put in our camper so it's convenient in the box.The templates are okay, nothing special. Tape is a bonus.

This is a package of 23 pieces of wooden blocks specifically advertised for whittling. There's a variety of sizes but all of the blocks seem to be good quality in terms of blocks for whittling. There isn't any big knots in the wood and there aren't any excesse fraying or spots where the wood is splitting. These came exactly as advertised and I'm completely satisfied. If you are wanting to get into whittling then this is a great wooden block set to start off with.

I had requested BeaverCraft basswood from the Ukraine. Beavercraft basswood is smooth and easy to carve. It is a bit expensive but worth the price. This wood is from China and very hard to carve. On top of that I had to pay BeaverCraft prices. I am very dissatisfied.

These blocks are great bases to work with in carving, a good size and sturdiness. They smell clean and are free of blemishes as well. The variety is nice, with a wide range of projects for beginners to try based on the different sizes. The number of different blocks for the price is a good value. The stencils, protective wrap, and pencils are wonderful as well, though it would be nice to have some videos on using the stencils as well.
