The Watchers (DVD)

Description:

This forest isn't charted on any map. Every car breaks down at its treeline. Mina's is no different. Left stranded, she is forced into the dark woodland only to find a woman shouting, urging Mina to run to a concrete bunker. As the door slams behind her, the building is besieged by screams. Mina finds herself in a room with a wall of glass, and an electric light that activates at nightfall, when the Watchers come above ground. These creatures emerge to observe their captive humans and terrible things happen to anyone who doesn't reach the bunker in time.

5.0 out of 5 stars I love M. Night Shyamalen movies, looks like his daughter isn’t far behind.

Anytime I have the opportunity to watch a movie directed by M. Night Shyamalen, I’m in! He is one of greatest directors of all time. It would only be accurate that his daughter, Ishana Night Shyamalen, would be as good as her father. And she is!The movie was quite a start for Ishana M. Shyamalen’s directorial debut. This show kept us watching every scene throughout the entire movie. It probably won’t be my favorite movie of all time, but I’m very glad that we watched it. I’m not disappointed at all in our choice to watch this movie. It looks like we are super impressed with any movie done by the Shyamalen family. The apple didn’t fall far from the tree when it comes to talent. Knowing that she wrote, made her story ready for film, and directed “The Watchers”, makes me excited for anything else that she directs as well. It doesn’t hurt that Dakota Fanning was the star in this movie. She pretty much makes any movie instant gold, and then to add the Shyamalen name to the movie, and it is a definite movie that we will want to watch, did watch, and look forward to more of her movies. Excellent work.

4.0 out of 5 stars Its ok but felt rushed

So I read the book and it was a much better experience. I didn’t mind them changing some things, like Mina’s sister, the professor and I understand they had to pace the story to fit a movie but you don’t properly feel the tension of how hard life in the coop was. What I HATED and spoiler** was they added the tv and music player and actual bed and couch to the coop. It was dreadful in the book as it should have been. Passing time in the coop was supposed to be terrifying, not easy, having a tv and music to pass the time. In the book Mina even mentions not being able to remember how music sounded or what comfort felt like because all they had in the coop was a rug, a pile of blankets in the floor, and a makeshift table from wood outside. Madeline wasn’t tense enough for me, Ciara was great, Daniel was a little too angsty but fine, Mina was good. Its just so much more enjoyable when they go from nothing and not knowing anything until they are desperate to escape and find the cement covered hatch, also that scene could have been amazing, in the book Daniel runs outside eager to redeem himself after locking them outside and finds the biggest boulder he can carry, he strains to pull it inside and repeatedly drops it on the cement over and over and over to free the hatch instead of a flimsy metal screen the came up after a couple punches.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Irish mythology tale

I know it got a lot of negativity but it was a beautiful movie to watch. I really enjoy Irish mythology so maybe I’m biased but really enjoyed it and while the twist wasn’t a huge shock it was done very well.

3.0 out of 5 stars A Promising Directorial Debut with Strong Atmosphere but a Familiar Storyline

D. · October 5, 2024

"The Watchers" marks the directorial debut of Ishana Night Shyamalan, daughter of M. Night Shyamalan, and offers an atmospheric supernatural horror set in the eerie forests of western Ireland. The story centers around Mina, a young artist stranded in a mysterious and dangerous forest. As she seeks refuge, she and three strangers must survive the ominous presence of "The Watchers," otherworldly creatures that haunt the forest at night.Visually, the film impresses with its use of expansive landscapes and an unsettling atmosphere that heightens the tension throughout. The haunting cinematography, with its use of negative space and vintage lenses, creates a palpable sense of dread that lingers in nearly every frame. The imagery often feels claustrophobic, despite the expansive wilderness, enhancing the sense of entrapment experienced by the characters. While the film excels in mood and visuals, its narrative suffers from a lack of originality. The plot borrows heavily from familiar horror tropes, and some critics have pointed out that the film feels like a pale imitation of Shyamalan’s father’s work, without bringing much new to the table. Although there are moments of tension and suspense, the story’s pacing can feel uneven, and the characters are not as deeply developed as they could be. Despite these shortcomings, Ishana demonstrates clear directorial talent, particularly in her ability to craft suspenseful scenes and visually compelling moments.Overall, "The Watchers" is a decent entry into the horror genre. It’s visually stunning and shows promise for Ishana Night Shyamalan’s future work, though it struggles with predictable storytelling and familiar themes. Fans of atmospheric horror will find it a worthwhile watch, but those seeking more innovative narratives might be left wanting more.

5.0 out of 5 stars Unique story 🪽🧚🌲

I really liked this movie. Before watching it I was excited to see if the movie would make any references to the fallen angels or if it would be more fae related. I thought this movie had a great storyline that was original, perfect setting, believable characters, and great ending. It’s definitely suspenseful, some drama, a little gore and a few jump scenes. I thought they did the monsters perfect with just the perfect amount of creepiness. Good watch.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantasticmovie love the main actors!

Good story when you can't figure out the end of the story before the movie actually ends! Love the actress and the movie roles she has chosen over the years! This movie did not disappoint and my family enjoyed it. Enough jump scares sprinkled through. But I still want to know who ordered that darn bird that just had to be delivered so quickly? That's the only thing not answered in the movie! What or whom is leading all these people to that one area?

4.0 out of 5 stars Creative and original.

It was nice to see some old world lore monsters in this film. The concept was unique and creative.

5.0 out of 5 stars Knowing what the watchers are really changes your perspective of this movie. Spoilers alert!

I absolutely love how this movie sticks really close to Celtic folklore. I have never seen a movie that painted the Fae like monsters. Most movies of fairies depict them as harmless beautiful creatures that are glorified by their magick. This one sticks true that the faeries are monstrous creatures that despise mankind. Plus it also explains why and how the faeries are no longer living amongst the humans. I actually rather enjoyed this movie. I wasn’t at all dissatisfied with it and loved the way they ended the movie. This is a movie that I plan to add to my physical collection.
