5.0 out of 5 stars Nice Little Digital Audio Player (Not Just for Kids)

    D.H. · November 3, 2024

Having been around in the 90's and 00's, I too amassed a large collection of CD's that I eventually ripped on my computer into digital audio files because we thought it was an easier and better way to have a music collection. Luckily, I didn't sell or get rid of my physical discs like so many of my friends but I still have all those audio files I love to listen to. It seems that in the 2000s there were so many music player options, most being pretty pricey and when cellphones became the main way people listened to music, the need for a stand alone player diminished. I however still love to listen to my old music files and until I received this player still used my computer to play these files. This player is amazing, has a quality finish and is well built. The screen is a pretty generous 4 inches (about as large as some cellphones) and features touch capability. The player has a sizable battery which I am able to get hours and hours of playback on before recharging. There are many preinstalled apps that feature audio streaming services as sell as eBook and recording options. If you get tired of listening to your own audio files (which are accessed by the microSD card slot and any microSD card up to 1TB), you can stream audio from one of the many services on the device or you can check out your local FM radio stations (wired earbuds needed for this function). The sound quality if amazing, playing a large range of audio file formats including FLAC, mp3 and to think this player is marketed as a "kids mp3 player". I am using a quality set of bluetooth earbuds and they connect easily to this player and the sound is almost magical. I can't think of one bad thing about this except I should probably get another one in case I drop or damage this one.

    4.0 out of 5 stars MP3 player using Android 9 (2018)

    V. · November 3, 2024

I really like that we are starting to see more MP3 players being manufactured. I still have lots of MP3 files and I look for speakers and other devices that either have a TF/Micro SD slot or a USB drive input for playing MP3s. It's nice though to have an actual screen, or even a touchscreen, and be able to navigate to a particular song if there are a large number of songs on that particular storage media.A person might consider getting something like this if they want to have something for the MP3 files and still be able to use their phone. It does use an Android based operating system, the version is Android 9, which came out in 2018. That is very outdated, with no security updates for many years, so for that reason alone, I will never use it to go online, but there's also the matter of the installed software.I would never enter my username and password into any of the apps installed on this device (Chrome, Bolo Music, Spotify, etc.). Using any of them online could be opening a whole can of worms because there's no Google Play Store to update them, and there's no Google Play Protect to scan them for security issues. If there's one thing I really hope you take away from my review it's that you should never use apps that you didn't personally install from Google Play Store, or that didn't already come on a phone from a manufacturer that you trust. If you don't take my word for it, you can Google it.For me, this will strictly be an MP3 player, using files that I personally created, and accessible via the memory card slot. I hope you will follow my advice and do the same. With those cautions, I can recommend this as an offline only MP3 player.

5.0 out of 5 stars Basically an Android phone without the cellular radio and camera — NOT just for kids!

    T. · November 1, 2024

I was looking for a DAP to stream flac-encoded rips of my CDs to a little Bluetooth amp when I saw this. Could it do the job? Turns out the answer is, “Yes. Quite well, in fact.”The Q8 is a light-weight (at just 109g/3.84oz) device running Android 9, roughly the size of a bar of soap, but just half as thick. If your equipment supports it, it’ll stream using the LDAC codec (it seems to default to “adaptive” mode—by enabling developer mode, I was able to set it to 990kps). I transferred files to the included 64GB TF card, popped it in the slot and turned it on. I tested it with two different BT receivers and had no trouble with pairing or playback. The only thing about it that feels remotely kid-centric is the included wall paper—but you can always change that. It has a bunch of pre-installed apps. The default music player is Pi Music, which can play flac files, but for a CD ripped to a single file, it doesn’t recognize the individual tracks inside (of course, one could install a different player app that does recognize the individual tracks). As previously noted, it’s really a full featured Android device, but I’m not going to review those other features. I don’t use earbuds, so I’m not going to review the ones that come with this player.I say it is quite well made. The shell is a good quality plastic and the colored part has a subtle pearlescent quality. It feels solid and nice in the hand. I particularly like the 4” high DPI display. For just $45 (at the time of this review), you get a nice little DAP (and a lot more functionality, if you want it).Comes in a nice, gift quality box.Disclosure: I received this product for “free”—in quotes because the IRS requires I pay federal income tax on the retail value. Great Gift For Kids | Good Quality Child's MP3/MP4 Player & Much More!

    M.E. · November 5, 2024

This TIMMKOO 80GB Kids MP3 Player with Bluetooth and WiFi, Parental Controls, is made of very high quality, durable materials. It features touchscreen, Bluetooth, WiFi, Parental Controls, Pre-Installed Spotify, Spotify Kids, Pandora, Audible, Audiobooks, up to 1 TB of memory utilizing SD slot, Supports MP3s and MP4s, supports 720p, 1080p HD video playback, USB, WiFi and Bluetooth data transfer, built-in 1800mAh lithium battery, continuously play 35 hours of music or 5 hours of video, Google app for web browsing, built in FM radio, voice recorder function, USB C charging cable, wired earbuds and instructions.I purchased this MP3/MP4 player for my 12 year old. She loves music and I want a device that would enable her to enjoy it without bothering her siblings. This player is amazing! This little MP3 player has so many great features. The Major Music Apps (Spotify, Spotify kids, Pandora, Bolo music, Tidal, Deezer, Audible, etc) come preinstalled, and as a safety setting children cannot add any new ones. Parents can remove ones they don't want or don't feel are appropriate for their family.NOTE: You cannot reinstall the apps once they are removed. There a lot of parental setting choices including screen time etc. so that you can customise this player for your child and know they will be safe listening and using it.Web browsing is possible with this player as well as streaming YouTube etc. There is also an FM radio built in, voice recorder etc. The Bluetooth allows you to use a mic for singing, connect to car audio, bluetooth speaker or earphones, earbuds, etc.I was very excited to see that she can watch MP4's on here too. This really is a great little device. I would definitely suggest getting an upgraded Micro SD Card, this device supports Micro SDHC, Micro SDXC, and Micro SD formats. I would suggest getting a 1TB one for it. It also supports many audio formats including FLAC.The included headphones had good sound for a wired pair, and I didn't expect that honestly. We got her Bluetooth ones to go with it (not included) so she can use it wirelessly. There are so many great features in this player but I have to say I am super impressed with the battery time! Up to 35 hours of pure music listening between charges and up to 5 hours of pure video playing. This little blue MP3 player would make a perfect gift for a special young person in your life.It is good value for money and I recommend it.

Decent portable multimedia player, BT42/Wi-Fi support, fairly well-built, not exactly cost efficient

    S. · October 15, 2024

This is a decent portable multiple player with wireless connectivity (BT 4.2 and Wi-Fi) and capable of a variety of other tasks via the pre-installed Apps (installation of additional Apps is NOT supported although some apps can be uninstalled). The performance is decent and the screen is easy to read and the touch screen is just fine without issues either. However, it's really not the most cost efficient device at this point in time.≡ Physical buildThe physical build quality is pretty decent. In fact, it's slightly better than expected with some sort of robust plastic frame and the entire device is somewhat hefty that's indicative of a quality product (well, or at least not a cheap plastic one). It's by no means amazing but it certainly is better than most other music player that I've come across in the last several years. However, the buttons on this particular player seem to be of slightly lower quality than a few others with very similar (if not nearly identical) design and style.≡ ScreenThe screen itself is decent; it's not IPS (at least it doesn't appear to be) or Gorilla glass but it does the job just fine as a 4" screen. The touch function also works reasonably well without issues. There are 2 soft buttons, home and back along with 2 physical buttons for volume and power. Unfortunately, the screen isn't as bright as I want it to be and even at the max brightness it seems a bit dim in comparison.≡ AppsIt comes with about 2 dozen apps; most of 'em are popular ones and well known while a couple others are, well, made in China I supposed. The primary media player is called Videos and it's actually MX Player; however, I can't tell if it's the real/official one from Google Store of it's something that's been compiled by god knows who. Anywhere, it has quite a few streaming apps as well as e-book and other media player that's more than enough for most consumers. Interestingly, you can NOT install any App on this and you are forced to use whatever they have provided and pre-installed. You can however disable/remove ones you don't want. The inability to install Apps is major drawback in my eyes because I'll be forced to use whatever they provide and I'm not a big fan of that.≡ Note: it comes with custom built Android 9 with an unknown security patch level.≡ PerformanceMultimedia playback in generally is just fine without issues. I have no idea what CPU/GPU it uses but there isn't much else either because again, you are limited to the Apps pre-installed. It does support both BT 4.2 and Wi-Fi so that's fairly decent. A variety of streaming audio/video Apps are preinstalled as well and they should be for the most part adequate for most people out there. It comes with 2G RAM and 16G storage with 32% storage used (68%, 10.88GB left) upon arrival so you aren't left with a lot to work with; however, it does come with a 64 GB Micro SD card and it can be extend the system storage to up to 80 GB, which is what this product is being advertised as. It supports a max of 1TB Micro SD card although that's not tested. I should also mention that it does NOT have the ability to rotate the screen (auto or otherwise) which is really is huge oversight at this point in time.✘ Strangely, it draws power (during charging) in an erratic manner so I'm not sure what's up with that. I hope it's not gonna explode.≡ ValueAll things considered, this is a reasonably decent multimedia player with decent hardware and software. Though, the inability to install Apps and the relatively dim screen are certainly a disappointment for me. With that being said, the physical build quality is pretty decent and the overall usability is reasonably good while and functionality of the player as a whole isn't bad at all either. The elephant in the room is of course the price and its cost efficiency; you can get a cheap cell phone for $100-$150 that offers exactly what this offers and MORE. You certainly do NOT need to use the cell phone as an 'ordinary' phone but only as multimedia player like this (i.e.NO SIM card or cellular plans). So which one would you choose? Well, that's for you to decide. It's somewhat reasonably priced at $76 for what it provides and its overall build quality, features, usability, and versatility, and performance. Your mileage might vary.

    NOW OUR "Home Stereo" DEVICE

    R.F. · October 31, 2024

ITEM REVIEWED: TIMMKOO 80GB Kids MP3 Player with Bluetooth and WiFi____________________________________________________________________________________________I AM VERY SURPRISED ANYONE WOULD RATE THIS PLAYER LESS THAN 5 STARS (or at least 4) STARS!This **IS**NOT**JUST** an MP3 player! I'd call it a "mini tablet" with quite a few apps pre-installed.Not only am I using it as a portable media device instead of my smartphone, it has become our goto "home stereo" device (instead of using one of our family member's smartphones). It's connected to our high end BlueTooth stereo speaker system - and it sounds great - just as good as using any smartphone. A great modern stereo solution. No more annoying smartphone beeps/tones/alerts when listening to music on our BlueTooth speakers during family or friend get togethers.I suppose the reason they call it a "kids" player is likely because they have limited the apps on it to various media streaming apps and although it is WiFi connectable (2.4GHz band only) to the internet there are NO communication apps (email, text, chat, etc) available. Further it is *impossible* install any additional apps. Check out the description for the list of pre-installed apps. Although it has quite a few audio streaming apps installed, it DOESN'T have any video streaming apps. But what you can do is copy your own MP3s, JPGs or videos onto its internal memory OR a micro SD card (it has a micro SD card slot and comes with a 64GB micro SD card). You can then listen to, or watch your own MP3s or videos. It comes with a set of "wired" earbuds - the audio using them is pretty good. Alternatively it does have BlueTooth so you can connect your own favorite headset for even better audio. It has a 4" touch screen which is relatively bright and not bad for watching videos on.As a bonus, it also has a built in FM Radio. You need to plug in the supplied (or any other) wired earbuds for the FM radio to work - as it uses the headphone wire as its antenna. This however does not prevent you from listening using your connected BlueTooth audio devices. The FM radio is relatively good in picking up stations and the audio is also pretty good. The only issue I have found is that when the screensaver kicks in the FM radio stops playing until I hit any button to wake up the screen. I simply extended my screen's sleep time to maximum. There might be another solution, and if there is, I haven't found it yet.Installed on it also are a number of well known E-Reader apps. So it can be used as an E-Reader as well!It has 16GB of built in memory storage and comes with a 64GB micro SD card for a total of 80GB of memory storage. You can substitute a bigger micro SD card but keep in mind that this player can only support micro SD cards up to as big as 1TB. Out of the box I have more than enough room to store all of my MP3 files (copies of CDs we own). But candidly we use one or two installed streaming apps most of the time.It has a built-in 1800mAh lithium battery which when fully charged gives you 35 hours of music (streaming from internet apps or playing locally stored MP3s) or 5 hours of video (playing video files you have copied onto it).It comes with a 64 page instruction manual which is pretty good. It covers a lot, but you do need to go to other sources on how to use some of the various apps installed. This is fair... just like most smartphone manuals do not have instructions on most of the apps installed on them either. The manual outlines well the parental control features/options of this device - disabling factory reset / limiting internet access / setting usage times / limiting usage duration and how to uninstall apps you don't want anyone to use.AND A CAUTION!!! Although you CAN NOT install any additional new apps, you can UNINSTALL most of the apps that come with it - if you've given this to your children and don't want them accessing one of the apps. HOWEVER you will NOT be able to re-install the app back again later! The instruction manual says you will get all the apps back only if you do a full factory reset. If you do this,,, I would recommend making sure that you have a back up copy of any JPG, MP3 or video files you have stored on it... or simply only store your own files on a micro SD card and make sure you remove the micro SD card before you do a factory reset. My only criticism is minor. I wish that they would have included a global radio streaming app. That way we could listen to a far away city's radio station. My work around is using the built in Chrome browser. Luckily the station we want to listen to most has a LISTEN button on their webpage.Considering what it is, and what it does, it's a good deal at the listed price of CAD$69.99 - AND at the time of this review I see that a 10% discount is being offered to bring the price to CAD$62.99 Even without the discount I believe this is a good deal for what you get.

Feature rich music, audiobook, ebook, & video player, lots of apps & can load own media

    C.R. · October 15, 2024

I love this little music, audiobook, ebook, and video player. You can play music, audiobooks, etc. through the speaker or through the included earphones or your own earphones, you can load your own media, or like so many kids do today you can just use apps such as Spotify, Deezer, Bolo music, Apple music and so much more. It's smaller than a cell phone, easy to put in your pocket, and easy to carry. This music player is so easy to use right out of the box. It comes with everything you need - the music player itself, a charging cable, a 64 GB SD card, earphones, and a very detailed and helpful manual. Many kids today don't use MP3s but instead use apps to consume media, and most of the apps that they would use are on here, from Spotify, Spotify kids, Apple music, Pandora, Bolo music, Deezer, Audible, audio books, Libby, librivox, kindle, chrome browser, and even an FM radio and another ebooks app. There is also a file transfer app, settings, a calculator, a clock, a recorder, and a file transfer app.You absolutely can transfer mp3s and videos but you don't have to. You could just use an app and log into it and access all your music or books or audiobooks. I love that they include Libby because that you can use that with the library system. And you can even use the FM radio as long as you have the earphones plugged in, though I don't know how many kids would do that, but it's a lovely option. Some adults would enjoy that.Because they include Chrome you can also go to YouTube or any other website you want, as long as you set up a wi-fi connection in the settings section. It's similar to an Android phone, so if you know that system it will all be very easy for you.The screen is colour with good resolution which is appealing. The music player is very slow to start up, especially the first time. But once it started everything is fast. And it starts up a bit faster after the first time. They include in adorable wallpaper with a rainbow and a yellow background and clouds, but you can change this by loading your own wallpaper or photos if you want to. And the included 64 GB storage card is a ton of storage to load your own media onto it.This is a feature rich music, audiobook, ebook, and video player with a crisp color visual display, tons of apps, it is so easy to use. The sound is good quality if you're listening through earphones but you can also listen through the speaker and it is good enough--and I love that you have the option of listening without headphones.

Essentially a locked down Android 9 phone. Headphone jack is powerful but has poor control.

    K. · October 19, 2024

This music player is essentially just a locked down Android phone. The sound quality is good for the most part. Bluetooth sometimes disconnects, but the main issue I have with the connections lies in the headphone jack. It's a typical 3.5mm jack, but the volume adjustment is terrible. At minimum volume, with the HD600 (which have 300 ohms of impedance) the output pushes volume at around 70+ db. While this isn't in hearing damage levels yet, using something with less impedance makes the volume louder and definitely would push it over hearing damage levels, which isn't kid friendly. The included earphones don't sound great, especially combined with the high output 3.5mm jack which pushes it into distortion levels.Bluetooth wise, I was surprised to see that these actually support AptX lossless. They do disconnect randomly from time to time but it doesn't take more than a second to reconnect to Bluetooth. Bluetooth volume is manageable, especially after enabling developer mode and disabling absolute volume. Absolute volume allows for the volume of the device and the Bluetooth device to be controlled independently, allowing for finer volume control.Despite what I said about this being locked down before, it's not that locked down. You can enable developer mode and also OEM unlocking, which would allow you to install a different bootloader. In case you're wondering, APKs do not work. I tried a few and none of them could install, despite being otherwise compatible. In other MP3 players, there often is a setting under parental controls to enable APKs - this one has no such setting. Now, it claims it can auto update. Every 3 months the manufacturer will send out an update that updates all the apps on the phone, or you can manually install a more recent APK on the device. I don't like the auto updating system - it means that your support is limited to the amount of time the manufacturer decides to support the device, which isn't going to be long for a device like this. The player has the typical music streaming apps like Tidal, Spotify, Apple music, etc. The icons are all like "clay" versions of the regular icons, which I honestly find a bit off-putting. The main offline music player is the Pi Music Player, simply labeled "Music" in the phone. It's a decent player, with equalization options, music sorting, and sleep timers, to name a few features. It also has Google Chrome preinstalled. In terms of hardware, I couldn't find the processor but I can confirm that it has 2 GB of RAM. It has a pre-installed screen protector and functions smoothly without issues most of the time.Overall, while it is able to do what it claims to be able to do, sounds decent, and works pretty well, I don't think I can recommend it. You'd get a lot more value from a cheap or old phone at this price, and you can always install parental control apps from the Google Play Store. The volume control is also a major factor when considering long term ear health as well.
