The sound is mostly average. Yamaha got carried away with trying to program listening preferences and naming them. Sound preferences are subjective. People understand high, low, and mid frequencies. Let them adjust those easily and you'll be ahead of the game. It's also just an average sound system - nothing special. So, I'd have to say the price is not justified. Yamaha's living on their past reputation with this one.

The volume has a ridiculous range where you need to hold the button for like 2 solid seconds just to hear anything. Also all the surround sound settings are crap and have bad echos or no voice sound from the rear only setting that’s true surround is 5ch. It has too many setting that only use the front speakers only. Other setting show they use all the speakers but sound really only comes from the front. Why would anyone buy a 5.1 to not use all of the speakers. Pretty disappointed after I thought Yahmaha was a step up from previous receivers.

Center speaker doesn't work and I simply asked for a new speaker and they wanted me to send the entire package back. I'm a disabled man in a wheelchair so this was unacceptable. I'll never buy from this seller again

I’ve had this for a while now. I can’t speak for anyone else, but from what I’ve experienced, the sound quality and volume range is pretty impressive. If this is your first real surround sound system, you definitely won’t be disappointed.
