Overall. And after getting a replacement, I love this hour glass.The only issue is the packaging.The glass hourglass itself fits tight but can be removed easily from the housing which, when paired with the lack of padding between that and the metal frame can very easily break the glass while shipping as my first one did.Past that, if you manage to get one in one piece it looks beautiful and works great.

I ordered this ELAINESTORE Hourglass Timer 60 Minute, Black Metal Frame Decorative Sand Timer (Black Sand, Large Size) for my teenage son; recently I got another large sized hourglass for my husband, and my son wanted a big hourglass like dad’s.This all started a while ago when I ordered an hourglass for my son. It was lovely, but only about six inches tall. My son has a long, low display table in his room for his antique opera scores and framed prints of his favorite Waterhouse paintings, he also likes to display “smalls”, those delightfully named antiques or tiny size and enormous charm, and some of his favorites from his goblet/chalice collection.Can you tell we took our only child to a lot of antique stores and flea markets over the years? He loves collecting, as do his father and I. So when I saw a little hourglass, I thought it would look great on my kid’s display table. It did, he loved it. Then my husband wanted one. So I found him one. Then my kid wanted a bigger one.. somehow, now we are collecting hourglasses.Actually, as collections go, I rather like the hourglasses. There’s something beautiful about them, both the actual designs and the way they let you see the slow passage of time. Our life rushes by way too fast, it’s lovely to stop for a few moments to watch the sand slip through an hourglass. It makes me aware how icily time does fly, it makes me want to savor the time we have together.My teenager is almost halfway through high school, soon he’ll be heading off to college. I’m treasuring the time we have left before he leaves for college. And if that means indulging him in collecting hourglasses, we’ll, that’s just fine by me,This is a lovely hourglass. It stands about 10” tall, and it’s about 5 1/4” wide. It’s made of black metal and clear glass, and the sand inside is a deep, inky black.Supposedly this is a 60 minute hourglass, I can’t verify that because my husband and my son love their hourglasses, they keep picking them up and turning them over before all the sand runs out. One hour seems about right, we’ve gotten close to an hour, but someone always flips it over before those last grains of sand run through, so I’ve never finished timing it properly.The design of this hourglass reminds me of the one the Wicked Witch of the West has in the Wizard of Oz movie. I think the tall vertical struts that support the hourglass give that feeling, I remember the witch grabbing the hourglass by one of the tall struts.This hourglass doesn’t show Auntie Em or anything else in the glass, just the black sand running through the hourglass. The glass is very clear and the sand very dark, it can get a bit mesmerizing. You could probably watch the sand trickle and use it as a meditation aid. I couldn’t, because I don’t have that kind of free time, but it sounds like a nice, aspirational thing to do.This looks great on my son’s display table next to his 100+ year old leather bound copy of the libretto of the Ring Cycle and his golden goblets and silver candlesticks and reproductions of Waterhouse’s Lady of Shalott. The hourglass has a vintage feel to its design. It looks comfortable next to antiques and vintage pieces. It has a gravitas and style, despite its modern construction and inexpensive price tag.At its current price ($25.99), I was very pleasantly surprised by the quality of this hourglass. It would make a lovely wedding or housewarming present. It would make a great present to yourself, as reminder to take a little time each day and slow down, to be aware that time keeps moving relentlessly, and we should mark its passing and prioritize how we spend our time.The tall black metal design would work with many different decor styles. At about ten inches, this is a nice, tall hourglass. It would look great on a mantle or bookshelf, or any other place of pride.I’m sure this won’t be the last hourglass in our family’s collection. This is a particularly nice example of an hourglass, and at the current price, it’s a nice bargain, too.It’s lovely, it tells time, and it reminds us of how important time is. Quite the nifty little multi-tasker, all done up in basic black metal and clear glass, with that deep, black sand that never stops trickling.

From looking at the other reviews I guess you had better be ready for this. The hourglass itself was not centered in the metal holder. I had to push it back into place. While this is not complicated it is kind of scary as you are waiting for the glass to shatter. It did go back and all is well.Anywho, it looks nice and seems well made. I didn't not measure the time but an hour seems about right or close. Nice black color on the stand and nice bright red sand.
