5.0 out of 5 stars Great Read!
This is a very original and unique book. It's extremely well written, character driven, and interesting storyline. The science behind the events that take place is almost non-existent, although that absence was hardly noticed because of the interesting information on the history of linguistics, which I found fascinating. There are many unanswered questions. Perhaps that's been done on purpose in anticipation of a continuation of the story. I would be disappointed if there are no plans to follow-up. Helen, the protagonist, is brought to life by the author. She's almost (but not quite) as interesting as the storyline itself and I would love to spend more time with her as she continues to unravel the mysteries of language, the written word, and the fate of the world. Highly recommended!
4.0 out of 5 stars Enticing and suspenseful!
I found the plot enticing and hard to put down. The reader is brought through one unexpected scenario after the next while gaining information on linguistics and history (of which was very detailed with unclear lines between fact and fiction). As the main character goes through a desperate investigation, the book allows you to reflect on the role of the written word, our dependency on data and technology, our interconnectedness and the great need for the noble qualities of humanity to rise above the debased ways of the war torn world presented in the book. I thought it ended too soon and wished for it to keep going, although I can appreciate its conclusion.
5.0 out of 5 stars beautifully written and highly engaging
The novel Entropy brings the reader through an amazing journey where we are shown how much of our daily lives depend on recorded information. As some unknown force causes written language to disappear, and all electronic devices begin to fail, a young, gifted linguist begins to see a pattern. She unravels the connections to a newly discovered New Testament manuscript, and rediscovers an early personal connection on her way. An enjoyable read for all who love the written word.
3.0 out of 5 stars Mixed feelings
It has a good story line, but way too technical. Slow reading due to the mixture of French and scientific terms.
5.0 out of 5 stars A true page-turner!
I could not put this book down! Each chapter ends in suspense, and the carefully researched details tie each cliffhanger together seamlessly. But what I loved most was how, in the midst of such utter global chaos caused by the unprecedented digital meltdown, the author connects with the reader by creating rich and nuanced characters. I felt like I knew Helen, and I found myself identifying with her at times and rooting for her throughout.A perfect summer read!! Highly recommend.
4.0 out of 5 stars For lovers of linguistics, history and the scientific method
If you love linguists, history, and the scientific method, this book is for you! Helen is an ancient Greek scholar who teams up with a computer science to investigate the collapse of technology. Things progressively get worse and society begins to collapse as they race to find answers. I was heavily invested in the story, and desperately needed to see if things turned out for Helen. I loved the slow reveal of the backstory. I would definitely read another book by the same author. There are a lot of side characters who die throughout the adventures, so many parts of the book are sad, but there are some very hopeful moments throughout the story. Please note that this is not a book told from a Christian perspective. Characters make comments about certain parts of the Bible being crazy. The book also discusses the story of Babel quite a bit, but doesn't really place that story in the correct Biblical context.Note: I received a free copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.
5.0 out of 5 stars Worth every minute!
I am impressed by the historic detail and the technical details in this most excellent novel. In addition, his characters and their motivations are thoroughly convincing. An author will read again in the future, I'm sure.
4.0 out of 5 stars Now what?
I don’t know about you, but I feel pretty confident I would have no idea what to do in the case of society falling apart, so it was fascinating to read how a linguistics scholar managed to do it. Randazz gives us a curious problem with a twisty and intriguing semi-solution. I do appreciate that things aren’t wrapped up in a big fake happy ending but in a successful one, nonetheless. My biggest quibble is that Helen seems to adapt to things a bit *too* well, which lowers the stakes for the reader. So while it could have been much more exciting given all the world changing drama, it was still a fine read that pulls you along.I received a complimentary copy of this book. All opinions my own.
