5.0 out of 5 stars Really Improved the Quality of My Display

    D.B. · October 4, 2024

This monitor calibration tool is easy and quick to use which I appreciate. I spent more time scanning a bar code, reading introductory material, downloading the software, and registering the product than I did actually doing the scan. Scanning alone only takes a couple of minutes unless you go into a more advanced mode to tweak the results. My setup is a Mac M2Pro and a big LG LED display. The results were great and really improved the quality of the display. The change was easy to see and is much preferable to the default settings. This is a fine tool and can be set to remind you to do regular calibrations to keep it tuned accurately. Easy to recommend.

4.0 out of 5 stars Monitor calibration, some quirks.

This is the essential version of the Datacolor Spyder, which means the software doesn't have as many features as the premium options. However, I was looking for more consistent color on my monitor, so this basic version does just that.In my experience, the setup and calibration process with this device was mostly straightforward. The provided instructions via the barcode or URL links on the included leaflet were sufficient. I did find the tutorial video helpful, but not very detailed. For example, the tutorial doesn't show that the lens cap portion of the spyder slides on the cable so it can be placed on a monitor. In fact, I found the part with the lens cap to be somewhat difficult to slide on the cable; it felt like I was going to damage the cord with the amount of force required. Some quirks I found on Windows is that right clicking on the desktop and selecting display properties turned off the calibrated profile. Also, when logging on to Windows, the calibrated profile took a moment to load. By default, on the Spyder software, it loads the profile onto the video card every minute, which is the recommended setting according to the Spyder support page. Apparently, Windows can’t reload the calibrated profile if Windows “recovers from sleep mode, hibernation, or full screen games that use their own color.”Overall, I like this monitor calibration system. After running the calibration, it corrected a green cast on my monitor I hadn’t noticed. The software has some quirks, the directions could be better, and the integrated cable on the spyder could be better designed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Made a huge difference

It’s amazing how different your monitors look after using this. My images look more true to life when editing. Setup was really simple—you just hang the hardware over your monitor. The software was just as easy: download, install, and with a few simple clicks, you're good to go. I have 4 monitors, and it took about 15 minutes to get them all calibrated. My only complaint is that the cord isn’t long enough if you keep your PC under your desk. Luckily, I have a powered hub on my desk, and it worked great. This is definitely a must-have if you do any video or photo editing.

5.0 out of 5 stars So easy to use

I can't believe how easy this is to use. I downloaded the software directly from the website and within minutes my monitor had been calibrated. Item feels well made and the instructions and software was super easy to navigate through.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must have

As a photographer and content creator, knowing that you are seeing an accurate representation of your work is essential. Being that most work nowadays is viewed on a screen as opposed to being printed means that it can’t just look good on the screen that you’re editing from. This device is very simple to use. You plug it in and follow the directions and you are steps from a calibrated screen. One thing that i have noticed is that you can calibrate it again and get a slightly different look than before. Even though that is the case, i still get a more consistent look across other devices that is true to my edited image.

3.0 out of 5 stars Excellent usability

I like this color calibration tool. I've been using an Xrite for years and was pretty excited to use another brand to compare it to. I know most professionals have switched Xrite after the spyder 5 fiasco, unfortunately my testing won't take into account the longevity of the unit . I found a lot to like about this model. Its very fast although it's only marginally faster than my i1 Pro. Its nice to see how simple the interface is, I think this model would be really helpful for any semi-professional looking to work within an accurate colorspace without needing to setup a million parameters. While the simplicity is nice, I find the price a bit high for this non-professional version. I think the big reason professionals will avoid this model is that it only works on monitors up to 750cd/m2 and the brightness/gamma and other settings are all locked to a pretty low number. In my personal option, I'd avoid getting a new datacolor and just go with a used i1 display Pro and put the extra savings into using more expensive software like calman.

Great way to verify manufacturer claims and calibrate monitors

    A.S. · September 29, 2024

The media could not be loaded. What's included:- Datacolor spyder- USB-C to USB-A adapter- Serial number for subscription- User guideThe Datacolor spyder is a great and easy way to verify claims by manufacturers regarding monitors and gives a real sense of monitor color quality for those who might need to know for work related reasons. The spyder is this little device which sort of resembles a strange looking webcam with a lid to protect the lens. On one end is the spyder and then there is a cable that is a couple of feet long with a USB-C head (although an adapter allowing for a USB-A head does come with the package). At first, its not immediately clear what to do with this thing since there are virtually no instructions. The full guide needs to be downloaded which is unfortunate because it does cause a little awkwardness when first pulling this thing out of the box. After getting the full information and subscribing using the serial code inside the box, the spyder is ready to be used. This particular version basically does two main things in my opinion, first it can evaluate and calibrate one's monitor and second it can perform a series of tests checking contrast, brightness, color channel coverage etc. These are all basic tests that a curious user may want to know. For example, I was most interested to get this for the following reasons. One, I wanted to evaluate my monitor vs manufacturer claims because I always see claims related to color gamut coverage and its really difficult to know what is true and what is not. Additionally, I have two identical monitors and wanted to calibrate them so they would be setup exactly the same so when I am in extended mode moving from one monitor to another, there would be no difference in colour. While I am not a professional who works with something like image production, I do work in an area where color can be a relatively important process and if I work on one monitor vs the other, I can get different results as borne out by the Spyder software after testing and evaluating my monitors. To use the Spyder, the software needs to be downloaded. I have Windows 11 and tested it there where it was no problem at all. Once the software is installed, there are basically two options for a user to choose among although there are more depending on the level of subscription one has.I used both but let me just touch upon the calibrate monitor option first. In this option, the software prompts you to follow certain actions with the main one being, plugging in the Spyder to a USB-C port of the PC being used and then placing the Spyder on to a designated spot on the monitor after the Spyder's lid has been removed, and holding it there. The software asks some questions related to ones monitor and has some auto detect features as well in case one doesnt know all the particulars about their monitor. It then instructs you to place the Spyder onto the monitor as noted and hold it in place for about a minute as it runs its courts where it ends up calibrating the monitor. I do have to admit that the end result is better than I expected (please see video). It also offers up a sense of color gamut coverage that my monitor has including sRGB (which is the smallest colour gamut) which my monitor covers 100%, as well as others such as NTSC, Adobe RGB and what is referred to as P3 but goes by other names as well. In each of these arenas my monitor does not perform nearly as well. If looking at the video there are triangles which indicate coverage of my monitor vs the color gamuts. So I ended up finding out that yes my monitor does cover the advertised 100% of sRGB but beneath the hood in other colour gamuts it does not perform as well as I would have hoped given how the monitor was advertised - and now I have empirical evidence to support this. The second main area is to run some analytics for the monitor to evaluate it in broad areas which are often advertised when monitors are sold including brightness, contrast, color gamut coverage and more. Here too the Spyder found a slight discrepancy between what was advertised vs what the Spyder finds although the numbers are close enough that I would consider them the same since there is probably a margin of error due to lighting in the room etc. My monitor is advertised to be 330 nits whereas the Spyder found it to be 320 nits and in contrast, my monitor is advertised to be 1000:1 whereas the Spyder found it to be 990:1. Other metrics were also very close, so I can say confidently that the Spyder is quite accurate in terms of its analysis and I would feel comfortable using it to evaluate any future purchases of monitors in the future. The software also allows for the printout of the summary of findings in a PDF format which can be saved on my PC and it does offer the ability to re-calibrate the monitor on a schedule. For me, this is really what I wanted to get out of the Spyder and it delivered. It actually also uses ambient lighting and a sensor on the Spyder to further calibrate ones monitor which is nice to see and works well. There are other applications that one would want to use this for including printing and image production but because these are not my field per se, they are not things that I focused but with the Spyder these are areas that would be useful for those in image production for example. In terms of getting up and going with the Spyder is really simple once the software is downloaded and there are tutorials but I didn't refer to them.So who would I recommend this for? In my opinion, this device will be great for those who have a curiosity about the quality of their monitors especially beyond the advertised metrics - I am one of those. Furthermore, if one wants to use their PC as a place to watch movies or use images, this would also be very helpful to getting the full rich color experience desired based on monitor settings. It's also a nice little device for those in more professional image settings but do keep in mind, their particular version is limited - there are others for more sophisticated users. I have a few portable monitors where the colors are wildly out of sync and I want to use this to both evaluate the stated metrics which I know are not accurate but I want to at least improve those monitors and calibrate them to acceptable levels. This tool will allow just that. This device works very well and is fast. Its a little awkward I admit holding the device on a monitor's surface for about a minute, so there is a little physical effort required, but the end result can be quite interesting and useful.A nice little device that works well to verify manufacturer claims and calibrate monitors.Cheers,
