4.0 out of 5 stars Pretty good small monitor speakers with multiple setup options
These are pretty good small monitor speakers. I actually expected them to be a little bigger, but for their size the sound is pretty good. One speaker is powered and contains all the controls, and the other speaker is a "satellite" connected by a supplied set of speaker wires. You can set whether your powered speaker is on the left or right, and you can select "bookshelf" or "desktop", each selection giving you a slightly different tone. Inputs to the speakers are all via the powered speaker and can be either two 1/4 inch plugs, 2 phono plugs, or one stereo 3.5 mm plug. There are volume and tone controls on the front of the powered speaker, as well as a headphone jack. I have the speakers connected as a separate monitor from my mixing board. The sound for these is good, but even with the bass enhancement tone they still sound small, and the top end sounds a little gritty. I'm still experimenting a bit. In a way there's a certain disadvantage to having all the tone and volume options, because it's difficult to arrive at what might be a satisfying "flat" tone.
5.0 out of 5 stars GREAT, great reference speakers
Before I say anything about these... I've seen initial reviews of this new version of the Mackie 3.5, talking about lack of bass. Yes, of COURSE. They are 3.5 inch speakers. They are not lacking bass in any way - they have exactly the amount of bass they should have - and more. Want more bass? Mackie offers what I assume is an equal quality matched subwoofer to go with these. All that having been said - these are GREAT speakers - not only in tone, but in power. When I first got them home, I apologized to the wife, plugged them in in the livingroom, jacked in my phone and fired up a little Cut The Cake and Bang A Gong - just to put them through their paces. And holy smokes are they LOUD when you want them to be! (Even made the wife smile - maybe Mackie should use that as a sales slogan.)Next, I brought them into the studio and put some more serious program - that I'm very familiar with - through them... and they make GREAT reference speakers. I pumped them up pretty loud, and they weren't breaking up one bit, even at a volume you'd find uncomfortable. They come with a bunch of settings that are useful, and have a great work/play knob. (Work=flat. Play=boosts the lows and the crisp highs.) Also include multiple cables for different applications.Lastly, the construction on these is solid. Really nice textured finish on the cabinets, plus a front facing volume control and headphone jack.Whether you're a gamer or someone with studio - of just someone who wants really decent sound out of their device... I can't recommend these highly enough.
