3.0 out of 5 stars A useful light from a brand I've never heard of.
This light is a bit of a head scratcher. Who made this? Why is its case white and lime green? It's like it was made for yoga studios or something, or YouTubers. I kind of fall into the latter half, but never asked for a white light case with lime green accents. The color science is interesting, having more color LEDs than just RGB. But I don't have a color meter that can map out the color gamut and accuracy. They are kind of expensive for a YouTube video. But I don't use RGB mode that often. What I'm interested in is bright white light. With magenta color correction. And this has that. This is my brightest LED, but it's not much heavier than my Amaran 150Cs. Curiously, the cooling fins on this are way smaller than the Amaran, which is surprising. Is it really so much more efficient? Or is it undercooled? The form factor is longer than my Amarans, but it shares a surprising number of similarities, including the grid pattern and yoke design. I don't love having a yoke at the bottom because the center of gravity shifts when the fulcrum is at the bottom, which is exasperated by the longer form factor. There is a handle at the top back of the light, but it isn't as convenient as the two side handles of the Amaran. The light is working fine for me, helping me suplement/fight daylight indoors and use large soft boxes effectively. But I should switch to a bigger stand because the longer form factor makes this a bit tippy with a big softbox on it.This has more plastic than the Amaran. For example, the whole light stand socket on the Amaran is metal - as it should be IMO. But the Suncrafter has a metal insert in a plastic socket. It's an odd choice and makes this a rather more consumer oriented light than a pro light. The Achille's Heel of this light is the screen. It has limited viewing angles and can't be read straight on or from above, you have to view it from below. And some of the segments on mine are defective and dim, making it hard to read (it's hard to show in photos because my cell phone's auto HDR automatically brightens and equalizes the image, making it easier to read than in real life.)Overall, I'm giving this 3 stars because it has nice features and brightness, but is defective out of the box due to the broken screen. And the build quality is too plasticy for the price point and for a 300 watt video light.
3.0 out of 5 stars I want to love this but...
I think Suncrafter has a nice product here, but not something I can recommend. The COB LED space is very cluttered and its hard to differentiate. I think that this light is nicely designed technically, the light looks good, the controls are simple and straightforward. I run my own gear, and rarely does my gear go out on a shoot that I am not on, because of that, my stuff is treated well. I am not certain that this light is robust enough to hold up to much abuse. The shell is lightweight and plastic. The tilt mechanism is also plastic and lightweight. This could be a point of failure, but time will tell. The price however is similar to higher quality, more robust competitors, and for that reason, I am disappointed. There is no case included with this unit which other manufacturers do include, there is also no cover for the COB, which I think is important. None of these are deal breakers, but for this price, they should be part of the kit.On the plus side, the light is very quiet and output is very nice.
3.0 out of 5 stars Maybe Not Professional Use
So, it works great, love the color options and all. But the build leaves a little to be desired, and I just don't think it puts up enough fight with its competitors to be where it's at on the tag. Pound for pound, price-to-quality ratio-wise, it's not really even a contender. I'm being generous with 3 stars, I think.
