This "Downy Rinse and Refresh" actually did freshen my laundry. It works better than vinegar for removing odors and detergent residue. I had a seemingly unsolvable laundry odor problem. I think it resulted from using too much detergent along with an HE clothes washer that does not use enough water to rinse well. My clean clothes would begin to smell in storage or while wearing them. I previously tried other remedies such as vinegar rinses and even Lysol disinfecting additive. Finally, this Downy Rinse made a significant difference. Downy Rinse is a big improvement. My clothes appear noticeably brighter and cleaner. The recurring malodor is reduced. There are some product downsides though. The Downy is dispensed very late in the last rinse cycle and only briefly reaches fabrics. Running a separate rinse and spin cycle using Downy Rinse might be more effective. Another downside is the product price. Downy Rinse is expensive for everyday use. The very vague directions suggest 1/4 cup per load. That is only 24 loads per 48 oz. bottle. That works out to 54 cents per load (based on $13 for a 48 oz. bottle). That load cost is higher than detergent. Yet, I suppose if you really need a solution to odors then almost any price is worth it. I plan to keep using Downy Rinse indefinitely. I've run through three bottles so far. One more note, the product scent is strong and remains after drying. It doesn't bother me.You may have experienced my same problem. Odorous "clean" laundry seems to be common now. Probably due to HE washers. The odor problem has a name, "rebloom." You can find explanations and tips online. The active ingredient in this Downy Rinse is citric acid. The citric acid breaks down old detergent residue that coated the cloth fibers. That old residue traps dirt and bacteria underneath. Hence the odor that recurs even after washing. This citric acid Downy Rinse solves the problem. Downy Rinse is not just a perfume.

If you have a teen boy then I’m sure you know the amazing smells that can imbed themselves into their clothing. For years I always had to keep his separated from ours since even after a heavy wash in the expensive brand soap the smell would linger on his clothes and transfer to ours. I’ve tried the oxy for smelly clothing (best of them all), the sports version of every detergent out there, made my own detergent and have even added baking soda and vinegar to wash without completely getting rid of the smell. Short of burning the clothing I thought it was just part of life.I got a small sample bottle of this in the mail and figured I’d give it a shot. I found the worst or the worst and ran a normal cold water load. I knew this wouldn’t work but wanted to see how good it would do in cold water. I used scent free Eco detergent with a full dispenser trays worth of this. When the clothes came out of the dryer to my surprise there wasn’t even a hint of teenager smell on them!!!!I can finally wash everything together without worrying about me or my husband smelling like our son after a day of sweating from mowing lawns! I also have switch to using cold only on all our clothes and they definitely last longer without fading.This stuff is amazing! I highly recommend giving it a try in your worst smelling items. If it can remove the smell we’ve been fighting then it can most likely beat anything anyone can grow at it.The only thing I don’t like about it is the cap. In the pictures and the commercials they show a flip top with a tiny spout. I’ve yet to see a lid like that. The cap has to be removed and the opening is very large making it difficult to handle, especially for someone with arthritis or any other hand issues. I now pour it into a larger drink pitcher that is easy to dispense. I’ve also been diluting it about 1/3 using home distilled water to make it go a bit further. It’s very thin and pours too quickly so I always add more than needed unless it’s diluted.The Bolo price is also the best I’ve seen so now I have it on a subscription so we don’t ever run out!Please don’t ever get rid of this one. The last few laundry detergents I’ve liked have been discontinued. I’m hopeful that the manufacturer will keep this going as it’s a great product and is saving our clothing and noses!
